In The Beginning….
In August 2019, almost exactly a year ago, we were peacefully sipping tea and almond milk lattes in a Topanga Canyon coffee shop brainstorming how to roll out our brand and mission, the idea of a Global Pandemic was nowhere in site, and yet…call it premonition, intuition or prophecy, we saw the sign clearly – a shift was coming and we wanted to be part of that change.
So we began by asking, What do we live for? And the answer was really very simple.
On a purposeful level- Home. Family. Health. Wellness – in body, mind and spirit. On a passionate level- Art and Design.
We started to dig a little deeper…
How do we combine our purpose with our passion?
In what ways can they serve one another?
We both agreed that the world has enough things, even beautiful things, and we didn’t want to be another shop of just…things. Our product offering had to reflect a higher calling, a mission.
The number 18 in Hebrew numerology is the equivalent of the word “Life” and it was important for us to “activate the life” of the goods we create. We started working, planning, getting excited to share this platform; an homage to ancient ways, Jewish culture and Hebrew wisdom we grew up with and loved.
We were so excited!!!
Then we were shut down; literally. It was as if the world stopped. We were all there. We all know that feeling. It’s probably the first world-wide collective shared moment we can all relate to…and what did it all mean? What did it bring to the surface? Well beyond our obvious physical health and safety, it pointed our compass right back to where we started in the coffee shop- our collective spiritual wellness and art as a medium to bring that into our lives.
The world needs something better. Something more meaningful. Time with family. Slowing down time. Time to connect, reflect, tap into story, ritual, ceremony, nature and spirit. So we kept on working, working, working, thinking – this will hopefully be over soon and we can go back to….and BAM! Racial tension, sadness, grief, protest – what is happening in the world???? And the only answer we could boil it down to was this: LOVE. What we really need right now, more than ever and more than anything is LOVE.
And that starts with yourself, in your home, in your community, in your circles, in your relationships with others and it spreads on and on. We believe now is the time to share and learn from the collective wisdom of our heritage with one another, to work towards a true “Tikkun Olam” – a concept of “Healing the World” for all people. Everywhere.
We are Verse 18. We Welcome You here.
Growing up – Jewish wisdom, warmth and celebration filled our homes and people of all faiths and ethnicities were welcome.
Jewish life is built on circadian rituals that accompany day to day activities from the cycle of our birth to our death. These rituals uplift the monotony of everyday life, gives pause for wellness and enhances the mundane to the extraordinary.
The calling that whispered years ago was now a message loud and clear – share this with others. At Verse 18 we bring to life Hebrew words and Jewish wisdom to elevate home goods, gifts and apparel.
